February 24th, 2025, marks the third year of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The third year of the “Russian three-day special operation,” the Russian war that brought devastation, destruction, and genocide to Ukraine.
On February 23rd the local Ukrainian community gathered in Norfolk to commemorate the third anniversary, condemn the russian aggression, acknowledge the heroism of the Ukrainian people, and thank for the support from Ukrainian allies. As Nazar Syvak, the vice-chair of the Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads, said: “We [Ukrainians] do appreciate all of the American support that was provided but we are looking forward to a just peace.” Ukrainians continue to fight and, despite the ongoing spike in disinformation, they are striving for just and long-lasting peace. Peace that is not dictated by Russia, but that is made from the position of strength.
Hampton Roads is home to more than 500 Ukrainians, many of whom have come to the US after the start of the Russian invasion in 2022. The Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads is working to unite the Ukrainian community and its American friends through cultural exchange, education, and humanitarian efforts. We were honored to host a commemoration event in Norfolk and appreciate all the supporters who came to show their solidarity with Ukraine.
