Our Mission
- Raising Awareness: We educate the broader Hampton Roads community about Ukraine—its rich culture, language, and history—fostering understanding and meaningful connections. Through education and advocacy, we want to share Ukrainian culture, introduce Americans to Ukraine, and educate the Hampton Roads community about the current situation in Ukraine.
- Humanitarian Relief: In partnership with Ukrainian and American organizations, we provide vital assistance to Ukraine, supporting relief efforts and aiding those affected by the Russian aggression.
- Establish a Community Center: We are working on creating a community center for the Ukrainian community in Hampton Roads. The local community needs a space to celebrate traditions, preserve our heritage, and build a sense of belonging.
History of the Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads (UCC)
The Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads (UCC) was officially founded in October 2024 as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, marking a significant milestone in the development of the Ukrainian-American community in the region. Its creation was the result of a thoughtful reorganization and unification of two grassroots initiatives: the "Korali" Tidewater Ukrainian Chorus and the "Victory Kitchen" Fundraiser for Ukraine.
Origins
- “Korali” Tidewater Ukrainian Chorus
Founded in October 2022, Korali was created to preserve and promote Ukrainian musical heritage in Hampton Roads. Through traditional and contemporary performances, the chorus became a cultural beacon, strengthening community ties and raising awareness of Ukraine’s rich artistic legacy. The chorusmaster is Nataliia Sytnyk, whose leadership and musical expertise have shaped the group’s artistic direction. - “Victory Kitchen” Fundraiser for Ukraine
Launched in February 2023, Victory Kitchen was a volunteer-driven initiative focused on humanitarian aid for Ukraine. Through food festivals, cultural exchange community events, and donation drives, it raised critical funds and awareness. The kitchen’s chief cook, Galyna Dotsenko, played a central role in its operations, preparing meals that brought people together in support of Ukraine.
Both initiatives were founded by Valentyna Sonmezler, whose vision and leadership laid the groundwork for what would become the Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads.
Formation of UCC
In October 2024, recognizing the need for a unified and sustainable organization to support the growing Ukrainian community and its needs, the active community members, volunteers, and leaders of Korali and Victory Kitchen reorganized their efforts into the Ukrainian Community Center of Hampton Roads. This transition allowed for a more structured and impactful approach to cultural preservation, community building, and humanitarian outreach.

A Community United for Ukraine
Nevertheless, Ukraine continues to fight against the Russian invasion. Every day, Ukrainians are defending their sovereignty, identity, and right to exist as a nation separate from Russia. It is truly a battle between David and Goliath— russia, backed by China, North Korea, and Iran, relentlessly targets Ukraine’s infrastructure, civilians, and even children. Ukraine, much smaller than the aggressor, must scramble for supplies and support.
